FIGURING OUT WHAT YOUR NEXT CAREER MOVE SHOULD BE
Do you have a nagging feeling that your current career path isn't for you anymore? Know your current role isn’t for you but at a loss as to what to do next? Well, we are here to let you know that it’s okay; don’t panic! Here are 5 simple but proactive steps you can take to help you get some clarity on the situation:
- Journal about your current job satisfaction. Get a notebook and each day, write about your experiences at work. Write down your daily reactions to things that have happened at work, and note how you feel about them. After a couple of weeks take a step back and look over what you’ve written - are there any recurring themes? Which parts of your current job do you like and which parts or elements have got you feeling like you want to run for the hills? This should help to clarify what it is you should be looking for in your next role. Is it a different company culture? Is it financial, are you looking for a higher salary or better benefits? Or perhaps you’re looking for more support or progression? Get as specific as possible because this will help you to find the right job for you.
- Become clear on your interests, values, and skills. Look back on previous hobbies, voluntary work, or even sports you've played, and try to determine whether these interests are aligned with a certain career path. - Ask for suggestions. No one knows you better than your friends and family, so sitting down and brainstorming ideas for career alternatives with them could be super helpful! Alternatively, consider meeting with a career counsellorfor professional advice.
- Shadow someone for the day. Networking with others in the field you aspire to work in, can lead to you asking if you can shadow them for a few hours to see if you can physically see yourself within that line of work. This will either cement your interest in a certain role, or will demonstrate that it’s not for you – either way, it’s a win, because you’re one step closer to figuring out what you want to be doing.
- Boost your skills. Look for ways to develop new skills by signing up for an online class to expand your knowledge and learn a new skill. Not only will this look amazing on your CV to new potential employers, but it will give you key skills, knowledge and understanding that will benefit you as you move forward. More skills and more knowledge equals more confidence – and this can only be a good thing when you’re looking for work.
